Frequently Asked Questions about the Recording Process
Am I looking for interns?
No. However, if you’re a student I do allow you to shadow me for your career project.
Am I hiring?
Not at this time.
How much does it cost to record an album?
Fleetwood Mac spent about $1 ,000,000 to record Tusk in 1979, the Beatles recorded their first album in 10 hours (and as they said, the second one took even longer). Without knowing more about what you want to do, it’s impossible to say. Contact me if you’re interested in having a discussion.
When does the clock start?
So the joke goes, how do you make a small fortune in the music business? Start with a large fortune. Please be punctual. I love recording but this is a business, and a very expensive business. I can’t pay for all the fancy toys I have for you if you’re not here when you stay you’re going to be. The clock starts at the time you scheduled to come in. No-shows are charged half the scheduled hours.
For bands, I give half an hour for load-in, and then the clock starts. The reason being is that setup is really where I earn my money. I position mics, get drum sounds, mic up guitars, basses, plug in keyboards, set levels, and a million other little things that make a big difference in how you sound. I can’t do this until you get here. If you’re late, you used up your half hour.
How does the money work?
I require 50% down at the time of booking for new clients. We even up at the end of each session.
How much do I charge?
I charge by the hour at the rate of $100 per. I do have a discount for larger clients who can block out large amounts of time, or who are willing to pay for blocks in advance. And sometimes I’m willing to get creative for labels or entities with a substantial following.
